Victoriana

Mountjoy is quite literally a Victorian prison. There is no in-cell sanitation so prisoners go to the toilet in buckets, sometimes trough-like communal ones, and then later 'slop-out'. The Inspector-General of Prisons called Mountjoy inhumane, degrading, overcrowded, recommended that it be demolished and described the attitude of the Minister (is it pronounced McDowell as in Foul or McDowell as in Fool?) towards reform as "frightening and fascist".

The minister's response?
Lets built a super prison in North County Dublin. And wait, while we are at it lets stick people with mental illness in there too.

According to Schizophrenia Ireland the decision to co-locate the Central Mental Hospital with the super prison will stigmatise people with mental illness. It will make their rehabilitation and re-integration into communities and the workforce extremely difficult.

We are swapping one Victorian solution for another.

Please sign the petition organized by schizophrenia Ireland to reverse the decision to locate the central mental hospital with a prison
