Fingal Council Approve Rubber FootPaths for Sutton Bayside

David Healy had posted on his site some time ago about Fingal approving rubber foothpaths for Sutton and Bayside. There was a good story on this in The Sunday Times yesterday (no link unfortunately). Trees that crack concrete footpaths do not have to be cut down when rubber paths are used. They are also nicer to jog on and cause less injury to people who fall on them (wait till you hear the compo bill that councils foot for this every year). They also last longer than concrete paths so there are many compelling arguments.

The rubber will come from a local company, recycled from old tyres. The really interesting thing is that the price of this recycled rubber is pretty much static whereas concrete has leapt by 40% in price in the last five years. Little wonder really given that behemoth CRH dominates the Irish market and that Fianna Fail (the Developers party) have been allowing the construction sector to suck up an ever greater share of the economy.

(Will update this story with links when this story hits the headlines or David Healy's site)
